Flexible sheets falling in an inviscid fluid

چکیده

We use inviscid simulations to study falling flexible sheets in the two-parameter space of sheet density and bending rigidity. The basic behavior is a repeated series of accelerations to a critical speed at which the sheet flexes and rapidly decelerates, shedding large vortices. The maximum and average speeds of the sheet are closely related to the critical flutter speed. The sheet trajectories also show persistent circling, quasiperiodic flapping, and more complex repeated patterns. For small bending rigidity, the motion becomes less regular. At intermediate bending rigidity, trajectories show a well-defined falling angle relative to the vertical. For larger sheet density and bending rigidity, the overall motion is more horizontal. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3432128

This poster will present a classification of the typical motions of 1-D flexible bodies (“beams”) undergoing arbitrary motions in high-Reynolds-number fluid flows. Previous works have generally focused on rigid bodies and small-amplitude motions. We have developed an implicit numerical scheme coupling the motion of a flexible fiber to ambient vorticity shed from the fiber edges and advected wit...

Vortex sheets and diffeomorphism groupoids

In 1966 V.Arnold suggested a group-theoretic approach to ideal hydrodynamics in which the motion of an inviscid incompressible fluid is described as the geodesic flow of the right-invariant L-metric on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the flow domain. Here we propose geodesic, group-theoretic, and Hamiltonian frameworks to include fluid flows with vortex sheets. It turns out th...

Large-amplitude capillary waves in electrified fluid sheets

Large-amplitude capillary waves on fluid sheets are computed in the presence of a uniform electric field acting in a direction parallel to the undisturbed configuration. The fluid is taken to be inviscid, incompressible and non-conducting. Travelling waves of arbitrary amplitudes and wavelengths are calculated and the effect of the electric field is studied. The solutions found generalize the e...

Flapping states of a flag in an inviscid fluid: bistability and the transition to chaos.

We investigate the "flapping flag" instability through a model for an inextensible flexible sheet in an inviscid 2D flow with a free vortex sheet. We solve the fully-nonlinear dynamics numerically and find a transition from a power spectrum dominated by discrete frequencies to an apparently continuous spectrum of frequencies. We compute the linear stability domain which agrees with previous app...

On the planar extensional motion of an inertially driven liquid sheet

We derive a time-dependent exact solution of the free surface problem for the Navier–Stokes equations that describes the planar extensional motion of a viscous sheet driven by inertia. The linear stability of the exact solution to oneand two-dimensional symmetric perturbations is examined in the inviscid and viscous limits within the framework of the long-wave or slender body approximation. Bot...
